Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger Thermal Design and Fabrication

Britannia Jahco designs and fabricates custom built shell and tube heat exchangers in Dandenong South, Victoria. Every unit is pressure tested and certified to ASME, AS, or TEMA standards.

Key Highlights

Thermal Design Using Aspen EDR

britannia:jahco sizes every shell and tube heat exchanger using Aspen Exchanger Design and Rating (EDR), built on over 40 years of HTFS research data. Outputs cover heat transfer area, tube count, shell diameter, and pressure rating before fabrication begins.

Materials Carefully Selected for the Service

Shell and tube heat exchangers are used across a wide range of process conditions. We fabricate in carbon steel, stainless steel, duplex stainless, copper-nickel alloys, titanium, and nickel alloys. Materials are carefully selected to match the chemical make-up, temperature, and pressure of both process streams.

Code-Compliant Fabrication

Every unit is fabricated to ASME Section VIII Division 1 or AS 1210, which governs pressure vessel registration in every Australian state and territory. Welding complies with AS 3992, AS 4041, ASME IX, ASME B31.3, and AS 1554. Britannia Jahco holds ISO 9001 certification through LRQA.

All Four TEMA Configuration Families

britannia:jahco designs and fabricates fixed tubesheet (BEM, AEN), U-tube (BEU, AEU), floating head (BEW, AEW), and kettle reboiler (BKU) types. The right type is matched to your fouling profile, cleaning method, and thermal expansion needs.

End-to-End Project Management

britannia:jahco manages each project from thermal design through to on-site installation. Replacement tube bundles are fabricated to client-supplied drawings or to drawings we prepare from the original unit.

NATA-Accredited Testing

Non-destructive examination covers eddy current, UT, RT, and MT. Every unit ships with a full ITP, CMTRs, and a weld map.

Why Choose Our Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger Services?

Shell and tube heat exchangers work by passing one fluid through the tubes and a second fluid around them inside a shell. Heat transfer rates depend on the tube side and shell side conditions of your specific process. Every custom-built unit we supply is designed to those conditions, not adapted from a standard product.

We are an Australian manufacturer with design, fabrication, testing, and certification capability in one workshop. We use Aspen EDR for rigorous thermal sizing, hold ISO 9001 certification through LRQA, and supply heat exchangers for oil and gas, industrial refrigeration, compressed air, hydrogen and renewable energy, hot water, fuel handling, chemical processing, and food and beverage applications.

Signs You Need Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger Services

Consider our services if you experience:

When process temperatures run consistently high, a thermal assessment confirms whether the unit needs cleaning, reconfiguration, or replacement.

Heat transfer rates decline as fouling builds over the design life of a tube bundle. Addressing the root cause — fouling, a configuration change, or a bundle at end of service — brings costs back in line.

Requirements for specialised designs or updated code compliance.

Where corrosion or wear is found at inspection, a PMI check and tube bundle assessment confirm the right path forward.

Australian projects must comply with AS 1210. Petroleum and gas applications fall under API 660. Fabrication must meet AS 3992, AS 4041, ASME B31.3, or AS 1554 as the scope requires.

A change in throughput or operating conditions is a good opportunity to commission a unit sized to the new specific process requirements.

Our Process

1

Initial Consultation

We review your service specification and identify the configuration type that suits your cleaning regime and maintenance plan.

2

Detailed Engineering Design

Aspen EDR sizing covers heat transfer area, tube count, shell diameter, MAWP, tubesheet thickness, shell wall, corrosion allowance, and vibration analysis for tube bundle services.

3

Material Sourcing

Materials are sourced to ASTM and AS 1548 specifications across carbon steel, stainless steel, duplex, copper-nickel, titanium, and nickel alloys. Cladding is available on corrosion-resistant duties.

4

Fabrication and Assembly

Certified welders work to qualified WPS under AS 3992, AS 4041, ASME IX, ASME B31.3, and AS 1554. Scope covers new custom units, replacement tube bundles, and specialty equipment including TEMA Class R construction and sanitary stainless for food and hospital use.

5

Rigorous Quality Testing

Hydrostatic testing follows AS 4037 and ASME Section VIII at 1.3 to 1.5 times design pressure. NDE covers eddy current, UT, RT, and MT. Units ship with CMTRs, a weld map, and a full ITP..

6

Installation and Final Inspection

We manage transport, on-site installation, and a final inspection before handover.

Quality, Reliability, and Expertise

Partner with britannia:jahco and experience the difference in performance, transparency, and client service.

Why Choose britannia:jahco?

britannia:jahco brings thermal design, certified fabrication, NATA-accredited testing, and code-compliance documentation together in one workshop. We hold ISO 9001 through LRQA, design to ASME Section VIII Division 1 and AS 1210, and fabricate to TEMA classes R, B, and C. We provide efficient timelines, transparent communication, and deep industry knowledge provide clients with exceptional results at each stage of their project.

Safety in Our Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger Services

Materials carry CMTRs with full heat number traceability. Welds are made under documented WPS and PQR records and verified by NATA-accredited NDE methods. Hydrostatic testing at 1.3 to 1.5 times design pressure confirms pressure envelope integrity before any unit leaves the workshop.

Rigorous Heat Exchanger Design

britannia:jahco uses Aspen Exchanger Design and Rating (EDR)on every custom built shell and tube heat exchanger we design. EDR is built on over 40 years of HTFS research data and aligned to ASME BPVC Section VIII 2023 edition standards. Mechanical design covers MAWP, tube wall and tubesheet thickness, shell wall, corrosion allowance, nozzle loads, and vibration analysis for tube bundles in high-velocity service.

Industries We Serve

The britannia:jahco team goes where others cannot follow. From custom-engineered heat exchangers to pressure vessels, and air receiver solutions we design to global standards using cutting-edge software to exceed expectations.

Confidence built. Peace of mind ensured.
